If you want to be noticed on the roads there are certain cars that you should drive and some you should avoid. For example, if money is no object then a Lamborghini Gallardo would be a perfect choice to get heads turning in your direction, however coming in at approximately 140,000, this option isn't going to be for everyone. Adversely, buying a Ford Focus would be a terrible idea for the attention-seeker, with there being roughly 12 billion of them on British roads to date. So what do buy if you want to be noticed but have a small budget? Look no further than the Mitsubishi L200.

On first impressions, the L200 is BIG...VERY BIG! It is also styled in a manner that suggests the driver definitely wants to leave his or hers impression firmly on other road users. The XL cab is curvy and quite domineering when you see it driving past. This SUV has a dirty little secret however; it is practical and cheap. Starting at a very respectable 14,999 for the base model, this vehicle could potentially steal a large market share away from Land Rover.

There is more cargo space in the L200 than you will ever know what to do with and the double cab configuration will accommodate for adults more than comfortably. The chunky cab build has exceptional build quality that gives the Mitsubishi L200 a feel of rigidity and standard of construction that is not mirrored in some of its nearest rivals, namely the Toyota HiLux.

For the sake of authenticity I suppose that it is worth mentioning the L200's performance off-road, but this seems slightly pointless as I suspect the closest any L200 has got to dirt is a Cornish B Road. Nevertheless, the L200 is pretty handy off-road thanks to the responsive four wheel drive, low-range gears and locking centre differential. The 2.4 Litre Diesel engine is also gutsy and eager to please either on road or dirt track.

The quality of manufacture on the interior of the L200 is also worthy of note and far superior to that of its rivals. The leather upholstery, chic-looking dashboard, snazzy instruments and climate control make the L200 a very pleasurable place to be. The excellent suspension and handling makes this one of the most manoeuvrable and frankly car-like pick-ups on the market and further add to the L200's charm.

The only question is after 18 years of the L200, we have yet to see a significant switch in the market that sees cars of the L200's ilk start to take larger pieces of the commercial pie. The current model is unlikely to create any dynamic revolution in the market, but is definitely making great headway in its case. If Mitsubishi continue to update and improve the L200 over time, it will eventually permeate and begin to dominate over its rivals.

Until then a large proportion of the market will continue to buy the far pricier Land Rover and not get very much extra for their money. If you want a vehicle that will ensure you get looks of admiration from all and sundry, but don't have the kind of cash that can buy a supercar, then the Mitsubishi L200 may just be worth your consideration.
